baseball fields

on a west coast baseball field (abandoned, late at night, the grass still wet from the rainstorm), the word “victim” walked toward me from third base, and it shook my hand. it lifted me up, and the next day, i was on a bus headed toward an airport.

six days later—i was sixteen.

but not all baseball fields have been ruined for me. a year later, i walked out into a baseball field with an old friend. we brought hot chocolate, music, blankets. we came to watch the meteor shower. to be bathed in falling lights, we took our young bodies and sprawled out on the field. we watched. we danced. we ran into the woods—a train came roaring past, we screamed into the hollow of its sound. we went home and fell asleep.

i have faced both unforgiving hands and indescribable beauties in baseball fields. i have watched my father’s tall frame hit a homerun, and i have watched myself fight back. these are the things i will remember. these are the things i will continue to collect and love and hate. the baseball fields and the horrible people and the train tracks, i will hold on. i will let go. i will spread my young body on the field and become the survivor i have always been.
